The D7 visa is still the simplest route for people who want to live in Portugal on income they already receive: a pension, rental income, dividends or interest. In 2026 the reference figure changed, because it is tied to the national minimum wage.
How much you need in 2026
Portugal's guaranteed minimum monthly wage for 2026 is €920 (Decree-Law 139/2025). The means of subsistence for the visa are calculated from it:
- Main applicant: 100%, that is €920 a month
- Spouse or other adult: an extra 50%, that is €460 a month
- Each minor or dependent adult child: an extra 30%, that is €276 a month
What income counts
The consulate looks for stable, regular income: pensions, rent, dividends, interest or intellectual property income. The D7 is not designed for remote work for foreign companies; for that, the right visa is the D8, with a reference income of €3,680 a month.
The other requirements that matter
- An account with a Portuguese bank, which needs a NIF
- Accommodation in Portugal for at least one year
- Health insurance and a criminal record certificate, apostilled where applicable
The exact list depends on the consulate. That is why we always start with an assessment: we confirm the figure for your household and what your consulate will ask for.
After the visa
With the visa you enter Portugal and apply for your residence permit with AIMA. After 5 years of legal residence you can apply for permanent residence, with A2 Portuguese among other requirements. Your family can come with you: we explain how the family reunification rules apply to your case.
